Computers manage heat by using a number of fans that force air to circulate through the case. An unfortunate side effect of this is that dust and other small particles often are carried by that circulating air and end up inside your pc. In the long run, this will put more of a burden on your fans. They will ultimately fail if this dust is not cleared out. Once your fans fail, you will have to obtain new ones or your computer will overheat. Overheating components will die very rapidly. Many people don’t know that their fans are not working until a part dies.
Unfortunately, there are no more than a small number of safe tricks to remove dust from your system. The mechanisms that clear dust can also damage system parts. Even the safest methods should be used sparingly. There must be a balance between these two concerns.
The safest and easiest tool for removing dust is a can of compressed air. When you buy canned air, you want to ensure that the specific product is safe for computer parts. Since canned air is pretty cheap, price shouldn’t be an problem in this pursuit.
If you are dealing with a desktop computer, you will have to open the case in order to remove the dust from your system. Once you start spraying the canned air inside your case, you might observe a white foam forming on the surface. This is liquid butane being forced out by the air (typically because you are holding the can sideways) and it evaporates in very little time. While this does not harm your computer, you might want to attempt to keep the can perfectly straight as you are spraying so that it keeps working longer. You might need to prevent the fans from rotating by placing a soft object next to the fan blade. This is a divisive step; many people dust off their fans without doing this. As long as you choose something that will not damage the fan to prop the blades in place, it should be fine, but the decision is yours. You should make sure to blow the dust off of every fan in your machine. There might be a number of case fans. You also could have another fan on the heat sink of your CPU. If you have a high quality graphics card, it could have a fan as well. Your power supply fan is a particularly important one to clear; a dirty power supply fan can catch on fire.
You will also want to clean dust on any other parts inside your pc. After you have finished this chore, you could note a change for the better in the operating temperature of your computer. If so, you have almost certainly waited too long to dust your computer.
If you are dealing with a laptop, this will be a little more complicated. You can wipe off the outside very easily. Yet, the inside will gather dust as well. You can get into the fan intake and exhaust with the tiny straw packaged with most canned air items. For most people, this will solve your problem. You may have to take your laptop apart occasionally to clean the rest of the interior. This is an advanced step. If you don’t know how to open up your laptop without damaging it, you should probably not play around with this.
You don’t want to compulsively get rid of dust from your system. Cleaning too often could harm your fans or other parts. However, you should try to do it every couple of months. This will add years to the life of your hardware components.
